For more than two decades, Dr. Henric L. Horace has worked across education, higher education, child welfare, juvenile justice, and human services. Throughout every role, one question continued to emerge:
Why do capable people sometimes struggle to show what they know?
That question became the foundation of an interdisciplinary body of work exploring human performance, cognitive access, and the conditions that shape human potential. It ultimately led to the development of the MABEN Framework and the writing of The Measure of a Child.

Stage 01
Educator
Years spent in classrooms revealed a pattern that traditional explanations could not fully explain. Capable students repeatedly performed below what they clearly understood. The question was no longer whether this happened—but why.
Stage 02
HUMAN PERFORMANCE THEORIST
Searching for answers led beyond education into cognitive science, neuroscience, stress physiology, learning theory, and organizational systems. Over time, those discoveries evolved into an interdisciplinary framework that is quietly contributing to an emerging field of Human Performance Science.

Founder
To move the work beyond theory, Dr. Horace founded the MABEN Institute—an organization dedicated to researching, developing, and applying evidence-informed approaches that help people access their capacity under real-world conditions. Today, the Institute's work extends across education, organizations, healthcare, workforce development, and community systems.

THE PERSONAL STORY
Behind the research is a deeply personal journey.
As a child growing up in Liberia, Dr. Horace survived profound adversity that permanently shaped the questions he would spend his life pursuing. Long before he had the scientific language to explain it, he experienced firsthand how conditions influence what people are able to think, feel, and do. Those experiences sparked a lifelong exploration of resilience—not as bouncing back, but as an ascension toward transformation and becoming. That experience became more than a personal story. It became a lifelong quest to understand what allows people not merely to survive difficult conditions, but to become more than them.
Today, that path continues to shape his research, writing, speaking, and the ongoing development of the MABEN Framework.
